What are dentures?

Dentures are used as a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They are custom-made, they are removable and can be taken out and put back into your mouth. While they may take some getting used to and don’t feel exactly the same as natural teeth, modern-day dentures are natural-looking and more comfortable than they have ever been before.

What are partial dentures?

Partial dentures are used when a tooth or teeth need to be replaced but the remaining natural teeth are not strong enough or able to support other tooth replacement structures, like a bridge, or there is not enough bone for implants. Partial dentures are fitted to the gum and not impacted by the teeth around them.

What are full dentures?

Full dentures are used to replace all teeth and are fitted over the gums.

Have a chat with our personable dentists when you come into the clinic about which type of denture is right for you.

What are implant supported (All-On-4) dentures?

Implant supported (All-On-4) dentures are a type of dentures that are fitted and anchored with dental implants. These implants are permanent and fixed into your jawbone. The implant supported denture (All-On-4) is then attached to that implant. The advantage of implants in All-On-4 dentures is that they allow the denture to be very firm and strong. They are not removable and allow you to function almost as if you have your natural teeth. The dentures on All-On-4 is a very economical way to have a lot of teeth firmly anchored to the bone using only four implants.

What are the benefits and uses of dentures?

In addition to providing a replacement for missing teeth, dentures will help improve your appearance and your smile. Without support from the denture, facial muscles sag over time making you appear older than you are. As a practical replacement for teeth, dentures help you to eat and speak more comfortably. Dentures also allow you to chew foods normally which means you can maintain a proper, healthy and nutritious diet.

How are dentures made?

The time it takes for dentures to be made varies depending on the number of teeth being replaced and the quality of the denture required. Dentures can be constructed over one to four visits to the dentist. Your denture options will be discussed with you by your dentist before starting the treatment.

What are dentures made out of?

Full dentures are made of plastic (acrylic). All-On-4 dentures are made of a combination of acrylic, titanium, porcelain depending on the type of All-On-4 denture (for more information click here) and personal cosmetic and functional needs.

Partial dentures are made of plastic (acrylic), chrome cobalt and wrought gold.

How do you clean dentures?

Dentures should be cleaned every single day in the same way as you would clean and brush your natural teeth. Despite not being real teeth, tartar, plaque and other bacteria can still build up. To clean your dentures follow these steps:

  1. Remove the dentures from your mouth.
  2. Rinse them with clean running water to get rid of any remaining food particles.
  3. Brush lightly over the dentures with a soft toothbrush and a specific denture cleaner. Avoid using toothpaste, hard/electric toothbrushes or regular cleaners as it can damage the dentures.
  4. Rinse your dentures thoroughly and replace them in your mouth.

By removing your dentures when you go to sleep and placing them in warm (not hot!) water with a cleaning solution specifically produced for dentures, you’ll preserve them for longer. Note: Do not use any cleaning solution if your dentures have metal components.
