Dental Implants Perth

Our Perth dentists are highly experienced with Dental Implants

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is an artificially manufactured root for a tooth or anchor which is used to replace real teeth.

Dental implants act as a foundation upon which dental crowns/dentures can be placed. It’s the crowns/dentures that are designed to look and appear like your natural teeth giving you a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

Why would I need dental implants?

Dental implants can play an important role in a comprehensive cosmetic dental treatment plan.

Perth Dental implants can be used for cosmetic purposes, such as closing gaps and at the same time can serve as a functional replacement for teeth that need to be removed that have been damaged beyond repair.

Make sure you choose the Perth dentists with extensive experience in providing high quality and long-lasting dental implants for both cosmetic and general oral health purposes.

Make sure you choose Dental O So Gentle.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Function
Dental implants are fused to the bone and act like a normal tooth root, so they not only are able to match your natural teeth but function just as well too. Unlike some other dental treatments, implants are a reliable and long lasting cosmetic and functional dental solution.

Aesthetics
Some people seeking to improve their smile and appearance opt for dental implants like when replacing broken down teeth and closing gaps, or all on 4 in cases where all the teeth are beyond repair. The broken-down teeth are extracted and crowns and gum replacements that are attached to the implants are used. This allows for great cosmetic results as the teeth emerge out of the gums naturally.

Ad Hoc Application
Some cosmetic dental treatments require comprehensive application to all of your teeth, like veneers. Dental implants however can be used on an ad hoc or case by case basis to fill in gaps or replace individual teeth.

Speech Solutions
Denture wearers can sometimes experience speech problems. This is often due to ill-fitting dentures causing you to stumble over words and slur your speech. Dental implants, fitted by the specialists at Dental O So Gentle in Perth, offer an effective solution to your speech issues by anchoring the denture to your bone.

Comfortable Alternative
Other denture wearers may not experience any problems with their speech at all but can still find wearing their removable, partial or full dentures to be uncomfortable or annoying. In fact, sliding dentures can also be problematic when consuming certain foods. They can also cause pre-cancerous lesions.  Dental implants prevent the denture from sliding out of place, are very comfortable and unnoticeable, and offer a permanent and long-term solution.

Improves Oral Health
Dental implants do a lot more than just enhance your smile! They facilitate oral health by allowing us to close spaces without using the teeth on either side of the gap, therefore not impacting, negatively or otherwise, on your other teeth. Future oral hygiene is also more easily maintained with implants as the other teeth around them will be more accessible.

Convenient Solution
Thanks to the permanent and convenient nature of dental implants, you will no longer have to remove and replace your dentures. This can save you time by not having to regularly remove your dentures and, for some people, can alleviate the self-consciousness associated with dentures.

Long Term Health
Dental implants can last many, many years–even a lifetime–if properly cared for, cleaned and checked every six months. The team at Dental O So Gentle will help you to ensure the long-term viability of your implants as well as your overall oral health.

The Dental Implants Process

Receiving dental implants is a relatively straightforward and simple process.

Step 1 – Treatment Plan
When you come in to see the Dental O So Gentle team, they’ll put together an individualised treatment plan that takes into account your situation, preferences and needs. You’ll be walked through the plan and shown how exactly it will address your needs and concerns, as well as any other problems you may have. The treatment plan is created by our implant Dental surgeon in conjunction with your dentist.

Step 2 – Application
During the next session, the dental implants will be placed in your mouth. The first part of this process involves having titanium implants placed in the exact spot of the missing tooth or teeth and inserted into the bone.

Once the jawbone heals it will have grown around the titanium implant which will now be integrated with the bone, cementing it into the bone and ensuring it remains securely in place. This healing process and subsequent integration can take 6 to 12 weeks to be completed.

Step 3 – Abutment Placement
The abutment is the precision component that connects the implant to your mouth and allows for the placement of crowns or dentures onto the implant. This can only be completed once the implant is fully integrated in the jawbone. At this point in the process, your dentist will use an impression taken of your teeth and implant to construct a model of your mouth. This model will then be used to create your new tooth/teeth or denture.

The replacement tooth is called a crown and it is attached to the anchored abutment. These crowns are then matched to your natural teeth in terms of colour and shading so that they don’t only function like your other teeth but look the same. In some cases, the crowns can have the abutment incorporated directly into it. In the case of dentures, they can be removable or All-On-4 permanently fixed to the implants.

Bone/Tissue Augmentation
This step is not necessary for all patients and will be discussed with you by your dentist if required. The bone and tissue augmentation process work to make sure that the crown looks like a normal tooth by emerging out of the gum naturally by augmenting deficient bone and/or soft tissue.

Temporary Crowns
Temporary crowns are also not always required. If your implant is being placed in a spot that’s easily visible when you smile, you may want a temporary crown placed in the gap to hide it until such time as your permanent crown is ready to be applied. Temporary crowns are also used in areas of high cosmetic concern. Here they are used to shape the gum around the tooth/crown so that a cosmetic emergence profile is created, and the crown emerges out of the gum in a natural and cosmetic way.

What is an implant-borne denture?
Implant-borne dentures are dentures that use implants to anchor them to the jawbone and allow them to fit firmly in the mouth. Implant-born dentures are applied in a similar way to normal dental implants and crowns. The only difference in this case is that it is the dentures themselves that are attached to the implant via special abutments. This can either be done permanently or by connectors that allow one to remove the dentures at will and click back onto the implants.

Taking Care of Your Implants

Taking care of your dental implants is as important as taking care of your natural teeth and general oral health.

The same techniques you normally use to take care of your oral hygiene should also be used to maintain and clean your dental implants.

  1. Regular brushing
  2. Flossing every day
  3. Routine dental check-ups every 6 months
